The police officer who wrote the affidavit of arrest said the van drove through several benches in the lobby that are used for citizens waiting to “report they are the victim of a crime or obtain assistance of any kind from the police department”.

Chacon told investigators he thought he was ‘followed’ by several cars after leaving his home on Wednesday morning, adding that he ‘became paranoid about these vehicles and started making erratic turns and to take side streets to avoid these vehicles”.

The man told investigators he ‘chose to drive down the hall’ because he didn’t want to be killed, but did it to ‘be heard’, the affidavit states, adding that Chacon “knew it was stupid”.

Chacon is charged with attempted first degree murder, attempted first degree assault, attempted homicide while driving a vehicle, reckless driving, attempted assault while driving a vehicle, mischief criminal and reckless endangerment.

According to the document, records show that “there are at least 90 calls for service involving Nathan over the past several years where he reports strange occurrences that have not been substantiated.”

“Some of these service calls in the last few days leading up to this event imply that Nathan was becoming frustrated with deputies as he hung up on them and swore at them on the phone,” the affidavit reads.

In total, police say the damage to the department lobby, entrance doors and bulletproof glass is estimated at more than $100,000 but less than $1,000,000.

Chacon is being held at the Mesa County Detention Center in Grand Junction, Colorado.
