Disney ride Splash Mountain closes, to relaunch as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure : NPR

It was recently announced that the popular Disney ride Splash Mountain is set to close for good and will be replaced with a new ride called Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The new ride will be based on Disney’s 2009 movie, The Princess and the Frog, and will feature Tiana, the first African American Disney princess.

The decision to close Splash Mountain was made in response to the criticism the ride has faced in recent years for its connection to the controversial 1946 film, Song of the South. The film was criticized for its portrayal of African Americans and the song “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” was seen as a celebration of the plantation life of the south.

The new ride will feature a more modern and inclusive story. Guests will join Tiana and her friends on a musical adventure as they explore the Louisiana bayou and celebrate the culture of New Orleans. The ride will feature a new musical score, original animation, and audio-animatronics.

The new ride is set to open in the fall of 2021 and is part of Disney’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. The company has recently made changes to other attractions, such as the Jungle Cruise, to make them more inclusive.

The new ride is sure to be a hit with Disney fans, and will be a welcome change from the outdated and offensive Splash Mountain. It’s an exciting time for Disney fans, and this new ride will be a great addition to the park.
